Best habits for kids’ dental health

Healthy teeth start with good habits — and the earlier kids learn them, the easier it is to protect their smile for life. From brushing basics to smart snacking, here are simple daily habits that help kids build strong, healthy teeth and gums.

Start Good Habits Early

Oral care begins even before the first tooth appears. Gently caring for your child’s mouth from infancy helps prevent future problems and builds comfort with daily routines. Establishing these habits early helps prevent cavities and teaches children the importance of daily oral care.

0–6 Months (Pre-Teeth): Gently wipe gums with a clean, damp cloth or gauze after feedings.

First Tooth to Age 3: Brush twice daily using a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice).

Ages 3–5: Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste and brush for two minutes, twice a day.

Brush Twice a Day (for Two Minutes!)

Brushing twice a day is one of the most important habits for kids’ dental health. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to clean all tooth surfaces. Making brushing fun with music, timers, or colorful brushes can help kids stay motivated and consistent.

Floss Once Daily

Once two teeth touch, it’s time to begin flossing. Flossing removes plaque and food particles that brushing alone can’t reach. Kid-friendly flossers and parent supervision can make this habit easier and more enjoyable.

Lead by Example

Kids learn best by watching the adults around them. Brushing and flossing together as a family helps reinforce good habits and shows children that dental care is an important part of daily life.

Make Dental Visits Positive and Consistent

Regular dental visits help catch small issues before they become big problems. Children should begin seeing a dentist by age one or within six months of their first tooth, and continue with checkups every six months. Positive early experiences help kids feel comfortable and confident at future visits.
